Oklahoma starting pitcher Xander Mercurious in Omaha, Monday night.

Oklahoma beat Georgia at the College World Series Monday night.

It now has two chances to win one game to reach the best two-of-three championship series and, if you’re curious, the squad on the other side of the bracket in the same spot is No. 5 seed North Carolina.

After topping the Bulldogs 4-3, the Sooners are in the same position they found themselves in 2022 when they met Ole Miss for the crown, and kind of the same spot they found themselves in 1994, when they beat Georgia Tech to win it all, though the best two-of-three series to decide it had yet to be imagined.

And while that’s great and all, potentially historic given OU wasn’t considered among the nation’s top 30 teams when NCAA regional bids were announced three weeks ago, can we just put all of that aside for a moment and talk about Xander Mercurious?
