You can congratulate yourself on bringing in a head coach who’s everything the last guy wasn’t even when the last guy won 36 games his first three seasons and 20 of 24 his last two.

You really can.

When the last guy turned out to be a sanctimonious, lying, too-cool-for-school jerk, you can really do it.

Fans will love you.

Media will buy in.

What that new guy can’t do, however, is only be good at the things the last guy wasn’t.

Since changing skippers, Oklahoma appears more disciplined and who doesn’t look terrific in a coat and tie coming off a bus?

The Sooner defense is vastly improved and might even be one of the nation’s best five or 10 units, though it would surely appreciate staying off the field for longer than a minute or two.

OU claims a head coach willing to work and grind harder and longer than everybody else, taking lack of preparation off the table.

Indeed, everything that appeared so glaringly wrong under Lincoln Riley appears to have been righted by Brent Venables.

Also, what happened Saturday night atop Owen Field was utterly unacceptable.
