No state tourney for T-Wolves, but memories still attained

The wildest 3-pointer anybody's ever seen and a 26-point night from a couple Norman North seniors create unforgettable moments despite disappointing loss

Author’s Note: I owe a column to The Norman Transcript for each Sunday paper and frequently, that column appears here, too.

Originally I was going to write about Sooner basketball at Texas, a game Oklahoma managed to win, which may wind up giving us Porter Moser for another year as Sooner skipper. That proved impossible, though, upon learning The Transcript has moved its copy deadlines to 9:30 p.m., which basically puts it on the same timetable as The Oklahoman and Tulsa World, which routinely fail to get last night’s sports into the next morning’s paper.

Another blow to print journalism. Ugh.

So I picked up Norman North boys basketball, playing Deer Creek at Noble High School to reach the Class 6A boys state tournament, and hoped I could find a column in it. Had I not, I would have just written a game story and foregone the column. A win would have made it easier, but I think I made it work.

Also, even if you care nothing about the two teams, you’re going to want to read about the crazy 3-pointer. I promise.

An unfortunately fuzzy screen shot, taken from video on the Norman North boys basketball Twitter account, of Owen Eshelman dunking at Norman High.

NOBLE — Let us hope, as Owen Eshelman goes off to Washington State to play quarterback, where John Mateer’s transfer already has him one step closer to the field, his last memory of high school basketball is a good one.

Let us also hope Hezekiah Green, wherever he lands to play ball next fall, his last high school hoops memory is a good one, too.

Each deserves it after what happened Saturday evening at Noble High School, where Norman North fell 62-58 with a Class 6A state tourney invitation on the line.
