So Brent Venables was asked about Omarion Robinson and good chance you don’t recall who he is and for good reason, too.
Though he played in nine games last season, he didn’t do much, collecting three tackles as his only stats. Yet, no biggie, he was a true freshman.
Venables was asked about him likely because Robinson didn’t do much last season, yet his name appeared twice on the Sooner depth chart, released Monday, as a second-teamer at two positions, strong safety and free safety, behind Peyton Bowen and Michael Boganowski.
Now, I don’t mean to be a lazy writer but you’re going to love Venables’ answer, just a fraction of which goes a long way.
“Confidence, consistency are the things that jump out to me with Omarion,” he said. “A year ago he’s a freshman, and most freshmen play like freshmen … where they flash and do some great things and show you, give you reason to believe, they’re going to have great futures.
“Then one of the hardest things is playing at a consistent level. That’s what wins for you … It’s a hard thing to do because it means you’ve got to show up every day and you’ve got to take the bad with the good and you’ve got to put it in every day.
“That can’t be conditional to whatever results or opportunity you’re getting. You’ve got to show up every day and put the work in.
“The law of the price tag. You’re going to get what you pay for, and nobody’s going to give anybody anything.”
He kept going and going, and here’s the thing, too.
Of the 70 or so players appearing on the depth chart, for those who arrived in Norman as true freshmen rather than transferring in, Venables could have been talking about any of them.
