For Sooners (and everybody else), it’s not all about wins and losses, it’s about how and why

Nothing takes place in a vacuum, least of all, among others, Oklahoma football.

And because it’s fun, let’s name some of the others:

North Carolina, Kansas and Kentucky basketball; Nebraska, Alabama, Notre Dame and Southern Cal football; maybe Iowa and Oklahoma State wrestling and LSU baseball, too.

See? Fun.

Anyway, it doesn’t.

When it comes to Sooner football, every question asked and every answer given is specific not only to the season at hand but to the history of the program, because expectations are not limited to returning starters and last season’s fortunes but include the whole shootin’ match, which is to say it can go back a century.

Or more.

What’s that have to do with anything?

Well, I began with the idea the current roller coaster OU finds itself upon is not just about wins and losses but so much more, even if the last two men to get the memo are the ones both receiving and signing the checks, university president Joe Harroz and athletic director Roger Denny.

Then I went about figuring out how to explain it, and here we are.

I try to get beyond the scoreboard, headlines and easy answers to explain what’s really going on, sports and otherwise. If you value that kind of work, I’d appreciate your support. Paid subscriptions are $6/month or $60/year.
