Mateer is struggling with basic QB form, maybe the injury idk but hopping to throw, side arm slings and not his timing isn’t playoff good.
Arbuckle on the other hand runs an empty backfield inside our own 10 for a (the whole stadium knew it was coming) QB draw. We knew he wouldn’t make a throw down there, especially after his pick 6. The D and Special teams couldn’t bail the O out this time.
I’d be good with a transfer portal QB challenge for 2026 since Mateer is the best QB in our roster.
Sadly, I went straight to “not ready for prime time” before the game was over, based on what I was seeing from my $229 seat in the endzone (Section 10). I agree with much of what you wrote, but I lay much of the blame on Arbuckle, OU’s creative OC who is NOT creative! I’m assuming Arbuckle is calling the awful plays, devoid of any creativity. Who calls qb keepers on 2nd and 10? Mateer is supposed to be a threat as a running qb, but 19 carries for 15 yards (.8 yards per carry) is not creative, and will not help you make the cut! I’m an old man, but I’ve found myself mumbling “wrong play” at the snap far too many times this season.
It's certainly possible some of Mateer's struggles go back to Arbuckle, or that Arbuckle had answers in the Pac 12 he can't replicate in the SEC. He's hard to judge. Of course OU will be better on the line next season and that should lead to a better running game and if they continue to play great defense, they should be 10-2 again or better next year and back in the playoff. Still, of all the quarterbacks I'd want to go win me a game, Mateer is not one of them and it's not close. Maybe I should have put that line in the column!!

Agreed.
Spot on, as usual, Clay.

What a pathetic article.
