You’d think Michael Hawkins passing the test Saturday afternoon at Owen Field would be the story coming out of Oklahoma’s 44-0 victory over Kent State, a contest the Sooners missed covering the spread only because they lost interest in scoring over the final 18:55.

You’d think that and, sure, if you want to go with it, cool.

Hawkins suffered a couple stinker drives the way Landry Jones used to suffer them, going on three-and-out tears, and though he led a unit that scored points on each of its first-half possessions, three of those turned into field goals rather than touchdowns, which is terrific for placekicker Tate Sandell but sub-optimal against the lowly Golden Flashes.

Nonetheless, Hawkins completed 14 of 24 passes for 162 yards, the ball was mostly coming out on time, he wasn’t panicking in the pocket like last season and his touchdown toss total of three matched last year’s total when he started four games and appeared in seven.

He also ran for a score.

Good show.
